Hey everyone, I'm starting to make my own films and i'd just like a bit of help regarding editing. As you all seem to be from an I.Y. background this shouldn't really be too hard. I have a 233mhzPI 96MB RAM and a 24.3GB HD(Not very good, i know) and i want to gat a video capture card, but here's the bad part, I'm only 16 and i'm on a budget of about ?100
. I've heard TV cards can work just as well (obviously, excluding exporting video).I don't really need anything special, just to be able to capture video from a VCR or my camera. Also i'm going to be using Adobe premiere 5.1. So i was just wondering if anyone could reccomend an adequate capture device???

Your system is fine really...
You can get your hands on a capture card easily for 100$ too... My advice is to try EBAY and look around there... all you truly need is 16meg ATI all-in-wonder card...
Really, I suggest doing a tv video card search on ebay and researching the cheapest cards you find... hope that helps.

Computer video editing is great I would like to do some one day.
Do not make the same mistakes I have made, please.
Learn the parameters of what you are going to be dealing with or you will just end up frustraited time and again by one small problem or another.
Such as Frame Size, TV cropping, Data rate compression, 8 (vs) 16 bit stereo 11Khz (vs) 22Khz (vs) 44.1 and how they interact.
The list goes on and on.
I do not mean to scare you off as a good reference and cross reference lexicon would do the trick, but I have as yet to find one.
I would give advice but am in need of some myself.
Between the acronyms (My personal blind spot) and the constant crashes I am experiencing it has turned a well prepared VHS to digital to VHS project that should have taken two days at most to edit (I do most of my effects, fades, etc in camera) into a freaking nightmare that has devoured my time.
When it works it is the BEST but come to the party informed.

If anyone has a list of optimal settings for NTSC analog to digital to analog conversion handy please contact.

Don't let this bum you out SEIZURE it is work but worth it the first time someone asks to borrow one of your tapes again and they are not just being polite.
